Shear Wall Nail Pattern Calculator

Plan nail spacing and edge distance for a plywood/OSB shear wall — by panel grade, nail size, and seismic/wind zone.

Calculator

DF-L, Hem-Fir, SPF, Southern Pine

What makes this different

Generic nailing schedules give a fixed table. This one lets you pick the panel thickness, the framing species, and a target lateral load (plf) — then outputs the panel nailing pattern that satisfies common IRC/IBC schedules, with a sanity check on edge distance.

Who it's for & when to use it

Designing a shear wall for a garage, an interior bearing wall, or a small addition.

How to use

  1. Enter the dimensions of your material or the parameters of your project.
  2. Adjust the optional knobs (waste factor, kerf, planer allowance) to match your shop practice.
  3. Click Calculate and read the output. Use the per-item breakdown for ordering, the totals for budgeting.
  4. Compare the result to your lumber yard's quote — the effective $/BF column is the apples-to-apples number.

Formula: Panel capacity = unit shear × panel length. Standard IRC Table 4.3A values; interpolation by nail size and species.

Notes & tips from the shop

  • Shear wall design is governed by your local code and wind/seismic zone. Always verify with the AHJ.
  • Hold-downs, anchor bolts, and panel aspect ratio matter as much as nail spacing.
  • Field nailing at 12 in o.c. and panel edges at 6 in o.c. is a common minimum for 350 plf.

Frequently asked questions

Is a tighter nail pattern always better?

Tighter patterns increase capacity but waste nails and can split lumber. The goal is to meet code, not maximize.

What about staples vs nails?

Staples have lower unit shear — about 60–70 % of common nails of the same length.

Does nail spacing matter at interior panels?

Yes, but with reduced demand. Interior shear walls are uncommon; most shear is at the exterior.

Limitations

Single panel, single story. Multi-story load accumulation, hold-down design, and collector beams are not modeled.
