What makes this different
Generic dowel calculators ignore grain direction. This one adjusts dowel count and diameter based on whether you're joining edge-to-edge (parallel grain — fewer, smaller dowels OK) or edge-to-face (perpendicular — needs more dowels closer to the ends for racking strength).

Formula: Dowel count = floor((joint_len − 2 × min_end) / spacing) + 1. Spacing defaults to 5× dowel diameter for edge-to-edge, 4× for edge-to-face.
Notes & tips from the shop
- Dowel diameter ≈ 1/2 of stock thickness for most joints; thinner stock needs thinner dowels.
- Fluted dowels evacuate glue and air; smooth dowels can hydrostatically lock and split the workpiece.
- Always chamfer the ends of the dowel and use a dowel center to transfer hole locations between mating pieces.
Frequently asked questions
How do I align holes on both pieces?
Use a dowel center (metal pin that inserts into one hole, transfers location to the mating piece) or a self-centering jig.
Is glue enough, or do I need dowels?
For long edge-to-edge glue-ups, dowels (or biscuits, splines, or loose tenons) are essential to keep the joint aligned during clamping and add mechanical strength.
How deep should the hole be?
Half the dowel length goes into each side; so a 1.5 in dowel needs a 0.75 in hole on each piece.
Limitations
Single-row dowels only. Domino-style loose tenons and multi-row dowel patterns are not modeled.
